This foundational 5-week course will guide you step-by-step through essential handbuilding techniques, from preparing your clay to shaping, decorating, and glazing your creations. You’ll build confidence working with clay using traditional methods like pinching, coiling, and slab construction, all in a supportive, creative environment.
2 hours of instruction time + 30 minutes of clean up
Here’s what you can expect:
Week 1: Clay preparation, wedging, and introduction to pinch pots
Week 2: Coiling techniques — creating bowls or vases
Week 3: Slab building — designing mugs or plates
Week 4: Adding texture, handles, and decorative elements
Week 5: Glazing your finished pieces and preparing them for the kilnEach week, you’ll receive 2 pounds of clay, for a total of up to 10 pounds included in your registration. Need more? Additional clay will be available for purchase for $5.60 a pound during class. Your registration includes the use of all tools needed.
Special note: For your comfort and safety, please trim your nails and tie long hair back before class.

This 2-hour beginner handbuilding workshop is the perfect introduction to working with clay in a relaxed, creative environment — no experience needed!
In this guided session, you’ll learn the basics of handbuilding with pattern and texture to create your own one-of-a-kind ceramic piece.
Whether it’s a small tray, mug, or plate, you’ll be introduced to slab-building techniques and decorative surface design using stamps, leaves, lace, and more.
What’s Included:
2-hour guided workshop
All tools, clay, and materials
2 pounds of clay per participant (additional clay available for purchase at $5.60 per pound)
Firing and finishing of your piece — choose from three glaze options.
Aprons provided
What Happens to Your Piece After Class:
Your piece will dry slowly in a controlled environment, will be bisque fired, glazed by our instructors, and then go through a second glaze firing.
Finished pieces will be ready for pickup in approximately 3 to 4 weeks
